What are Information Systems?

Information Systems (IS), as we see it, are NOT the same as IT (Information Technology) as they include manual systems as well. Information Systems are the systems of information-based business processes (business rules) that define how the business should be run. The business processes can include manual procedures, as well as computer programs, operating together (integrated) as a whole, rather than IT seen as seperate. Such a view bridges the IT communication gap between business staff and IT, and encourages effective and efficient business use of IT.

Also, information systems are not just concerned with information but are a way of looking at organisations to improve performance. So, for example, cash flow can be improved by analysing the information-based business processes involved and speeding them up.

Sometimes though, improving processes by themselves is not enough and the organisation needs changing too. For example with one client, where we were looking at the business case for workflow (business process automation software), it was obvious that re-designing and automating the business process was not enough. This was because the Directors were not delegating work properly and the system would have ground to a halt, with reports showing that the Directors were the bottleneck. So in this case, the organisation needed to be changed too, by changing job descriptions to create the necessary delegation.

We also work on the business and technical processes that help business and IT staff design, develop or procure, implement, support and change information systems. This includes IS/IT Policies and Procedures, Standards, Methods and so on.
